REC Members Support Safe Afterschool Option

Jan. 6, 2012

Members of REC voluntarily allow the Cooperative to round up their electric bill every month to donate those funds to charitable causes through Operation Round Up® (ORU). The ORU governing board, Community Awareness of Rappahannock Electric Charity, Inc., (C.A.R.E. Charity, Inc.) recently selected the Rappahannock County public Education Foundation Headwaters afterschool program to receive $4,500.

L. Dolores Aylor, secretary/treasurer of C.A.R.E. Charity, Inc., presented the $4,500 check to Jane Bowling-Wilson, executive director of Headwaters. The donated funds will be used to support an after-school pilot program for students in third, fourth and fifth grade. Bowling-Wilson said, “We have parents who make a point of stopping by the office to say how much their son or daughter looks forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays now that they can come to the Headwaters program.”

REC members who have voluntarily enrolled in ORU contribute approximately $6 to $12 of tax-deductible donations per year. Sterling Schoonover, manager of member services said, “While less than a dollar a month may not sound like much, it offers significant support for groups like Headwaters, school programs, philanthropic groups, non-profit organizations, rescue squads, fire departments and other deserving causes within REC's service area.”

All REC members are encouraged to consider enrolling in the ORU program. Once enrolled, the extra change from their electric bill will be dedicated to charitable causes. Members can enroll online by visiting REC’s website or calling 800-552-3904 for more information.

REC provides electric service to over 155,000 connections in parts of 22 Virginia counties. With its general office in Fredericksburg, Va., Rappahannock maintains more than 16,000 miles of power lines through its service area, which ranges from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
