14th Annual Competition Takes Place June 3-4 at Meadow Event Park

The public can get a closer look at the skills and equipment used by electric utility linemen on June 3-4 when teams from Virginia and surrounding states compete in the 14th annual Gaff-n-Go Lineman’s Rodeo and the Terex® Equipment Operator’s Rodeo at the Meadow Event Park in Doswell, Virginia. The event is hosted by the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC).

Activities begin Friday, June 3 at 10:00 a.m. with the Terex® Equipment Operator’s Rodeo. Participants will demonstrate their skills operating bucket trucks, digger derricks and other utility equipment. The Gaff-n-Go Lineman’s Rodeo begins the next morning, Saturday, June 4, at 8 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m. The rodeo is the only event of its type held in Virginia. The name Gaff-n-Go refers to the “gaff” (metal spike) linemen attach to their boots to assist in climbing wooden utility poles.

Maxie Rozell, REC's manager of safety, security and risk management and co-chairperson of the event’s planning committee said, “The Gaff-n-Go Rodeo is an opportunity for linemen to compete and showcase the skills it takes to do their job – one which can be challenging even in the best conditions. The events are timed, but performing tasks with the fewest safety infractions is key to having a winning score.”

The public is encouraged to attend the event. Admission and parking are free. On Saturday there will be children’s activities from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. For more information on the rodeo and directions to the Meadow Event Park, visit www.gaff-n-go.com or www.facebook.com/gaffngo.
