Youth Tour
In 1958 a rural electric cooperative in Iowa sponsored the first group of 34 young people on a weeklong study tour of the nation's capital. Today nearly 1,500 young people and their chaperones participate in the Youth Tour every year.
Six high school juniors representing REC attended the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Youth Tour of Washington, D.C., in June 2010. Participants interacted with students from around the United States, toured historical and cultural sights and met their representatives in Congress.

Through this once-in-a-lifetime experience students may seize the opportunity to become concerned citizens better aware of the issues facing their communities. The application process for next year's Youth Tour will begin in January 2011.
To be eligible for this free trip, students must be high school juniors and complete the application form, including a 400-word essay. For additional information, contact Brian Wolfe, REC's public relations specialist, at 540-891-5914 or e-mail community@myrec.coop.
