A special note as we enter heating season:
Can you can save money by using electric space heaters? Yes, but only under certain circumstances. Manufacturers often suggest that savings can be achieved by turning the primary heating system’s thermostat down to a very low level (as low as 50°F) and then using the room with the space heater for family activities. Turning down the heat in most rooms could potentially reduce costs by as much as 60 percent, but those rooms would be uncomfortably cool. Heat pumps or central heating systems are more economical for heating because they are two or three times more efficient than electric space heaters.
