Community Connects with REC
REC's annual community event, Get Connected, attracted more than 500 members to Lydia’s Barn in Stanardsville.
REC employees connected with residents of Greene County and surrounding areas as they gathered for an evening of food, entertainment, learning about their Cooperative and - mostly - community.
The Hi-Horse Cloggers of Stanardsville and the jazz band from William Monroe High School in Greene provided entertainment as community members enjoyed a barbecue dinner from Blue Ridge Café and caught up with neighbors.
REC’s electric vehicle, a Chevy Bolt, was among the more popular features of the event. In addition, members learned about the Co-op Connections discount program, received information about saving energy and viewed details about REC’s water heater replacement program, among other things
Kids enjoyed Kona ice, had their faces painted and selected custom-made balloon animals. They also created their own fun, racing and playing ball on the grassy field behind the barn.
“Without a doubt, today I have met some of the nicest, most grateful members I've ever been around in my life,” said Robbie Beard, manager of REC’s Western Region. “It's a great time to interact with the members, listen to what we do right and what we can do better.”
REC CEO and President Kent D. Farmer talked with members and answered their questions.
“For us, this event signifies what REC is really about,” Farmer said. “Making connections with the people we not only serve, but also live alongside. We’re not just the electric company for these community members. We are their neighbors and proud members of the communities we are grateful to serve.”
REC provides electric service to over 167,000 connections in parts of 22 Virginia counties. With its general office in Fredericksburg, Va., the Cooperative operates and maintains more than 17,000 miles of power lines through its service area, which ranges from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
