Community Solar Learning Project

REC has installed at its Fredericksburg office a 10 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) generation system. This installation is about 2 1/2 times larger than the typical residential solar installation.

Information on the output of the solar panels is gathered every 15 minutes, allowing the system's performance to be evaluated in various weather conditions, at different times of the day and at different times of the year.

Over the last decade, there has been a rapid decrease in the price of solar panels and a record number of installations across the nation. As more REC members become interested in solar power, the Community Solar Learning Project will be used to demonstrate solar power in use so that all can have a better understanding of the potential of solar PV power generation.

REC currently has nearly 350 members operating solar panels through its net metering program. Net metering is a billing option for members who operate renewable generators, such as solar panels. The average capacity of the solar panels in operation by REC's net metering participants is 4 kW. REC has more net metering participants than any other electric utility in the state when compared to the relative size of each utility.
