Fall Back on Fire Safety
Thursday | October 1, 2026

When you turn your clocks back this fall, take a few minutes to check another important item in your home: your smoke alarms.

Daylight saving time ends Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, when clocks "fall back" one hour. The time change is an easy reminder to make sure the devices that help protect your family are ready to work. Test every smoke alarm by pressing the test button and listening for the alarm. Replace batteries at least once a year and change them right away if an alarm begins chirping.

Check each alarm's age, too. Smoke alarms should generally be replaced every 10 years, including sealed-battery models. Make sure alarms are installed on every level, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Check carbon monoxide detectors regularly, too.
