REC: Most Outages to be Restored by Late Tonight
Saturday | October 13, 2018

REC and mutual aid crews made significant progress overnight, restoring power to an additional 2,000 members who lost service as the remnants of Hurricane Michael roared through Virginia. As of 7 a.m., about 800 members remained without service. At the peak of the storm, more than 12,000 members were without power.

Most of the remaining outages are Essex, King and Queen, and King William counties, where storm damage was most severe. Additional mutual aids crews from other cooperatives arrived overnight and this morning, and they will be concentrated on the approximately 50 remaining damage locations.

REC still expects nearly all of the outages to be restored by late this evening, but cautions that many of the damage locations will require significant repairs on lines that are difficult to access. Crews have encountered numerous downed trees, broken poles, flooded roads and saturated rights of way, slowing progress in some locations.

REC provides electric service to over 165,000 connections in parts of 22 Virginia counties. With its general office in Fredericksburg, Va., the Cooperative operates and maintains more than 17,000 miles of power lines through its service area, which ranges from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay.
