REC Responds to Outages after Powerful Storms, Possible Tornadoes
Friday | August 9, 2024

REC crews and contractors continue to make repairs and restore service after strong storms, including possible tornadoes, roared through Virginia last night and early this morning.

High winds with the storms toppled large trees and broke dozens of power poles.

As of 1 p.m., about 3,200 members remained without power as a result of 112 different outage events.

Crews continue to discover additional damage as they reach additional outage locations.

REC projects the following times for outage restoration.

  • Outages in the eastern portions of REC’s service territory should be restored by 8 p.m. today.
  • In the Culpeper region, outages should be restored by 2 a.m. Saturday.
  • And in the Northwest portion of REC’s service territory, outages should be restored by 8 a.m. Saturday.

These projections could change as crews arrive at additional damage sites. To stay informed on the latest estimated outage restoration times, please visit the outage map on REC’s website: outagemap.myrec.coop.

REC has plenty of materials such as poles, wires and transformers that might be needed to make repairs, and all available line crews, tree contractors and other critical teams are now responding to outage locations.

REC’s Dispatch Center is fully staffed and, as always, will work around the clock to ensure the safe and efficient movement of crews.

Key points to keep in mind:

  • Critical safety reminder: Always stay well clear of any downed power line or anything that might be in contact with the power line. Report any downed lines to REC or call 911.
  • To report an outage, members can visit myrec.coop/out, use the MyREC SmartHub app or text OUT to 63273.
