Wood Chips Needed, REC Delivered
Wednesday | December 30, 2020

REC's Vegetation Management team maintains trees within the rights-of-way every day to ensure reliable and resilient electricity. However, this routine task often leads the team to become involved in the community.

The branches and limbs from pruning and trimming trees are often put through a wood chipper as part of the cleanup process. These chips accumulate fast and a crew can generate multiple loads each day. The crew works to accommodate member-owners and deliver the wood chips if a request comes in.

Boy Scout Troop #165 from Spotsylvania County reached out to David Dascenzo, a forester at REC, with a request for woodchips to use for a beautification project at Thornburg Middle School. A crew was working nearby and had plenty of mulch ready to deliver.

Troop members Colin Rieken, Jackson Valasko, Sam Valasko, Ronan Roehm, Nathaniel Williams and Carter Gorham dug into the mulch, spreading it across the school grounds around trees, bushes and flower beds.

“It’s always great to support the community whenever possible,” said Dascenzo. “Hopefully the mulch will help beautify the school’s landscaping and even help the troop complete a project towards earning a badge!”
