Thank You for Driving the Future with REC!

We extend our thanks to the 400 electric vehicle owners who participated in REC’s Electric Vehicle Pilot Charging Program. Throughout the pilot, participants shifted their charging to off-peak hours, earned rebates, and helped reduce overall energy demand—making the program a true success.

As the pilot concludes on May 10, the $7 monthly bill credit will come to an end. But this is just the beginning. Our team is actively developing new programs to continue supporting EV owners and offering new opportunities to save.

Stay tuned—more exciting updates are on the horizon!

EV FAQs

REC’s EV Pilot program is ending May 10, 2025.

The EV Pilot was not created as a permanent program or solution for EV charging, but rather as a learning tool for REC.

The State Corporation Commission allowed REC to pilot the program to determine the potential benefits to the Cooperative – and to members – for a limited time. Over the past 3 years that the pilot was in effect, REC was able to gain valuable insights that will steer the direction of our eventual new EV charging program. The valuable feedback that participants provided through the course of the EV Pilot will be factored into this new EV charging
program.

With the EV Pilot set to expire on May 10, participants in the program will receive their last bill credit on their May electric bills.

The EV Pilot will be replaced by a new EV charging program in the near future. As the new EV charging program develops, REC will communicate to the current members in the program, those on the waitlist, and other members who complete the interest form that will be on the Vividly Brighter Charging webpage. This list will be maintained by REC.

With approval from REC’s Board and the State Corporation Commission (SCC), REC launched the EV Pilot program in May 2022, initially allowing up to 200 members to participate and slated to end May 2024. In May 2023, the program expanded to allow up to 400 members to join. REC’s Board and the SCC then granted a one (1) year extension to have the EV Pilot conclude in May 2025.

The EV Pilot program has encouraged up to 400 EV owners to charge during off-peak hours in order to receive a $7 bill credit. Participants were asked to schedule their vehicles to charge during REC's Smart Hours (9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

The program reached the maximum capacity allowed by the State Corporation Commission, allowing a maximum of 400 members to participate. Additionally, more than 200 members have been on the EV Pilot program waitlist.

REC’s Energy Solutions and Clean Energy team, along with other departments across the Cooperative, will analyze the results of the program. Teams will then apply those findings to steer decisions on future EV-related programs and to better understand the expected impacts EV charging will have on the grid.

A few of the key findings have steered REC toward getting a Distributed Energy Resources Management System (DERMS) platform to help better manage and optimize EV owners’ experience in our eventual new EV charging program.

Do you have the ability to charge a vehicle at home?

Yes, I can charge at home.

If you have a garage, carport or driveway with access to electricity, you can probably charge at home. There are two primary home charging options.

Level 1 120V charging
(standard household outlet)

Level 2 240V charging
(requires installation and/or 240V outlet)

No, I can't charge at home.

Public charging is likely available, but keep in mind it takes time and prices vary substantially. Charging time varies based on car battery size and charger power.

Level 2 240V charging:
4 to 8 hours

Level 3 480V+ charging:
20 to 30 minutes (Not for PHEVs)
